Rick Lind was awarded the 2011 Hamline University School of Law Distinguished Alumni award at the Hamline Law School Mid Winter Reception on January 19, 2012. The award is presented by the Alumni Association to one alumnus annually. The recipients of this award have their names permanently displayed at the Law School.

MDLA has elected Mark A. Fredrickson as its Treasurer

The Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association has elected Mark A. Fredrickson as its Treasurer for 2011-2012, placing him in the center of a five-year leadership track culminating in service as President for the 2013-14 term. The MDLA, founded in 1963, serves the needs of lawyers engaged in the defense and trial of civil disputes and asserts leadership to promote balance and fairness in Minnesota legislation and courts. Mark has served as an MDLA Director for the past three years and is also active in the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel and DRI. He focuses on defending insurers, insureds, municipalities and transportation companies in personal injury, products liability and workers' compensation matters.

Richard A. Lind and Matthew D. Sloneker Release Liquor Liability Desk Book

Rick Lind and Matt Sloneker’s desk book titled “Investigating and Defending Minnesota Civil Damages Act Claims” is featured in the current September-October issue of Minnesota Claims Magazine. The desk book is a valuable resource for insurers, liquor vendors such as bars and restaurants, and attorneys defending dram shop claims. Thomas Evenson Appointed as a Public Member to the MAACB

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Evenson as a Public Member of The Minnesota Automobile Assigned Claims Bureau. He received this appointment on June 16, 2011 from Governor Mark Dayton. Evenson is also a Public Member of the Minnesota Automobile Insurance Plan Governing Committee.

Thomas Jensen Presenting at the Defense Research Institute's Strictly Retail Seminar

Tom Jensen, along with counsel for McDonald's and Starbucks, will present a panel discussion on the strategic use of alternative dispute resolution processes at the Defense Research Institute's Strictly Retail seminar on May 12, 2011 in Chicago. Thomas Jensen was elected Dean of the Academy of Certified Trial Lawyers of Minnesota

Thomas D. Jensen was elected Dean of the Academy of Certified Trial Lawyers of Minnesota for the 2010-2011 term. The 150 members of ACTLM passed a rigorous peer review approval process and written examination leading to board certification, and comply with a periodic re-credentialing process, establishing their expertise in state and federal court trial advocacy. Tom was also elected Chair of the Defense Research Institute's 450-member Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee for the 2010-2011 term. The DRI ADR Committee focuses on improving the quality of mediation and arbitration advocacy for counsel, and the skills of neutrals, in the civil litigation process. In addition, Tom was elected Vice President of the Professional Liability Defense Federation, a national organization whose members specialize in the defense of malpractice claims.

On October 7, 2010, at the Annual Meeting of the Professional Liability Defense Federation in Chicago, Tom delivered a presentation entitled "Survey of Ethics Ramifications Presented in the Defense of Professional Liability Claims." On November 29, Tom met with the claims management and staff of NCMIC Insurance Company in Clive, Iowa, and gave a presentation entitled "e-Discovery Primer" relating to the importance of managing requests for electronically stored information (e.g., emails, documents) in civil litigation.

LJSP Provides Pro Bono Services

The attorneys at LJSP provide pro bono legal services to persons of limited means, and also to public interest and charitable organizations. Each attorney aspires to annually provide 40 hours of such services. Examples of clients who have received free legal representation include single mothers in need of an orders for protection and harassment retraining orders from abusive former boyfriends, mothers who are in need of child support and marital dissolutions, a witness who reported healthcare fraud, and a criminal defendant who was subjected to a warrantless search and seizure. LJSP obtains most of its pro bono clients from the Volunteer Lawyers Network, Chrysalis, the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis and Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services.

Operation Backpack and LJSP

Over the past few months the people of LJSP have been preparing for our next volunteer project with Operation Backpack through Volunteers of America. This program provides new backpacks to at-risk children from low-income families for whom the purchase of a new backpack with its supplies is difficult. These backpacks are then hand distributed to children the week before school starts. We are proud to announce that were able to collect 28 fully stocked backpacks to donate to this wonderful program!!

Rick Lind presents at OMSNIC and FORTRESS Defense Counsel Seminars

On July 7-8, 2010 Richard A. Lind presented at the OMSNIC and FORTRESS semi annual Defense Counsel Seminar on the topic of defending licensure actions before State licensing boards. OMS National Insurance Company and Fortress Insurance Company represent oral surgeons and dentists. In attendance were defense lawyers retained by the two insurers in the United States , oral surgeons, dentists and claim representatives. Richard A. Lind, Paul C. Peterson and Thomas D. Jensen are available to represent Professionals before all State licensing boards in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. LJS&P lawyers also regularly represent Professionals in professional negligence litigation.

The people of LJSP are finding more ways to give back...

In Fall of 2009, we decided to put together a cookbook for charity. In this cookbook, the members of LJSP could showcase and share their favorite recipes. With the firm's encouragement and help of Xact Data Discovery, we were able to put together a 100+ page cookbook and donate 100% of the sale price to Second Harvest Heartland! We have collected over $1500 so far! Thanks to all those who put so much time and effort into making this possible.

Rick Lind Nominated as a Member of Council on Litigation Management

In Memory of Our Friend, Partner and Legend, Ted Sullivan

On December 15, 2009, our friend and partner Ted Sullivan died unexpectedly. Ted was a devoted husband, proud father, caring friend, trusted mentor, and an exceptional lawyer. His partners and colleagues at Lind, Jensen, Sullivan & Peterson received words of comfort from countless lawyers and judges, all of whom had their own "Ted stories." Minnesota Law & Politics recognizes Rising Stars as a way to highlight emerging attorneys who are either under the age of 40 or who have been practicing law for ten or fewer years. Amy K. Amundson was nominated under the category of Construction Litigation. Amy is an associate who focuses her practice on Construction Law, Products Liability and Insurance Law. Amy is passionate and energetic about being a lawyer. She dedicates herself to understanding the law that applies to the facts of each individual case to best represent her client's specific interests. Amy is the co-chair of the New Lawyers Committee for the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association, and she is active in DRI and other local legal organizations, including the Minnesota State Bar Association, the South Dakota Bar Association and the Hennepin County Bar Association. In her time away from the office, Amy enjoys competitive outlets. She plays basketball and golf and competes and trains for triathlons and runs races.

Thomas J. Evenson was nominated under the category of General Litigation. Thomas is an associate who focuses his practice on civil litigation. Prior to joining Lind, Jensen, Sullivan & Peterson, P.A., Tom was a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Kurt J. Marben in the Ninth Judicial District and a senior associate attorney at Hanson, Lulic & Krall, P.A.

Matthew S. Frantzen was nominated under the category of Civil Defense Litigation. Matthew is an associate who focuses his practice on civil litigation; including commercial transportation, personal injury, medical malpractice, legal malpractice and products liability.

Patrick J. Larkin was nominated under the category of Construction Litigation. Patrick focuses his practice in insurance coverage disputes, insurance defense litigation, construction defense litigation, workers' compensation and general practice litigation. Prior to joining Lind, Jensen, Sullivan & Peterson, P.A., Patrick practiced criminal and family law. He has been associated with Lind, Jensen, Sullivan & Peterson, P.A. since 2002 and was promoted to partner in January of 2007. Minnesota Law & Politics and Twin Cities Business have recognized Patrick as a "Rising Star" for the years 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2004.

Jason R. Prochnow was nominated under the category of Civil Litigation Defense. Jason specializes in insurance defense, construction litigation, toxic tort and asbestos defense. He advises clients by developing an understandable theory of the case supported by facts - not by disputing the obvious. Jason values mediation, but continues to take appropriate and necessary cases to trial in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Jason has obtained defense verdicts on liability in cases ranging from complex products liability/wrongful death actions, motor vehicle accidents and in Federal employment law matters.
